Milenia HybriDetect – Number of Citations grows further

The years fly by, and a lot happened in the scientific world of diagnostics in the last few years. We are more than happy that our HybriDetect product line is still up to date and enables scientists and companies all over the world to develop their own rapid Nucleic Acid Lateral Flow Immunoassay (NALFIA). Therefore, we want to share the latest trends using our HybriDetect with you.

The Milenia HybriDetect product line consists of HybriDetect (1 analyte) and Milenia HybriDetect 2T (2 analytes) and was currently extended by the HybriDetect Cassette variant. These lateral flow kits allow the customers to evaluate their very own amplification or cleavage reaction which is shown well by our customers publications.

Publications over the years

As you can see in Figure 1, after initial low publication numbers due to low awareness, the HybriDetect product line has been changed over the years. HybriDetect has established as a widely used universal detection platform for researchers and companies.

The total number of peer reviewed publications exceeds 400 in 2024.

Especially in 2021/2022 the publicity of the HybriDetect strip was boosted due to the corona pandemia where about 25 % of the publications were addressing this topic. Since then, the publication rate remains on a consistently high level.

Application Fields of HybriDetect

2024 the focus of researchers changed drastically compared to 2021/2022. Only 4 % of publications addressed SARS-CoV-2. Therefore, other topics got more important: The detection of different pathogens in the veterinary and public health sectors increased while the usage in the agriculture remains on a consistent level (Figure 2). HybriDetect can be used wherever rapid diagnostics at point-of-care is needed.

In the field of public health, it can be used not only for the detection of pathogens, but also for the detection of cancer cells, mutations and SNPs (Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism). All of this allows a better supply of patients due to a better and faster diagnosis.

The early and point-of care identification of plant pathogens can help to prevent economic losses in the agricultural sectors.

These are only a few examples of the possibilities of application. More detailed information can be found in the blog post Milenia HybriDetect – Type of Use & Fields of Application.

Molecular Amplification Methods and HybriDetect

The application of HybriDetect is versatile. Figure 3 gives a brief overview of the methods used in combination with the HybriDetect in 2024.

This year, research was focused especially on combining the HybriDetect platform with CRISPR/Cas (47%). Additionally, Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) and LAMP
reactions were prominent.

Other methods were also used in 2024 citing HybriDetect which were

  • RAA (Recombinase Aided Amplification)
  • MIRA (Multienzyme Isothermal Rapid Assay)
  • CPA (Cross Priming Amplification)
  • PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)

CRISPR/Cas – A Combination of Methods

Frequently, the CRISPR/Cas-HybriDetect method is combined with a preceding RPA (Figure 4). The aim is to amplify the gene sequence to increase sensitivity. CRISPR/Cas then serves to modify the amplified product so it can be evaluated on the HybriDetect. In very few cases, CRISPR/Cas is used as a stand-alone method (12%).

Other methods combined with HybriDetect in 2024 were:

  • LAMP (Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification)
  • NASBA (Nuclear Acid Sequence-Based Amplification)
  • ERA (Enzymatic Recombination Amplification)
